About

The Pacific Education Institute was founded in 2003 by a consortium of educators from the private and public sectors.

Together, we are establishing project-based inquiry programs that are grounded in Washington State’s educational reform goals.

To date, we have worked with more than 2,500 educators representing more than 75,000 students (K-12). We have helped teachers and students learn not only about environmental issues, but about the economic implications and perspectives of our state’s many stakeholders.

Our many partners in developing our programs include:

  • Directors of Education Associations,
  • The Superintendent of Public Instruction,
  • Directors of Natural Resource Agencies,
  • Deans of University Programs,
  • Managers of Business and Industrial Companies, and
  • Staff of Educational and Environmental Non-Government Organizations.

We Believe:

Students become engaged and stay in school if their learning environment includes the outdoors.

Students become competent decision makers by dealing with complex economic and environmental issues.

Students become self-motivated learners through real world experiences.

Student achievement research must guide PEI programs.

Public/private collaboration with educators helps all children gain basic skills in reading, writing, math and science.

Students become responsible environmental stewards and are prepared for careers through relevant studies in the environment.
